In 2020, we had 2 brilliant interns, Ly and Linh. Our internship took place virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The best-performed interns are entitled to a trip to Kagawa, Japan and toured by us. The year 2020 was our first attempt to accept interns. Both Ly and Linh did a wonderful job by not just setting a high standard/expectation for our internship as well as they did great performance on individual assignments. So, the 2020 interns, both are entitled to a trip to Kagawa. Finally, we got a chance to tour Ly in Kagawa, this weekend. And this article is about her reward trip.

Japan still does not allow tourists to enter Japan, as of May 14th, 2022 / 日本は現時点(2022.05.14)で観光目的の入国を許可していない

Before we move to the fun parts of this article, I would like to be clear that currently, the Japanese government does NOT allow foreigners to enter if the purpose is sightseeing. Then, how come Ly could be in Kagawa, Japan? Japan has opened up for new entry, partially, if the purpose were study and business. Ly has gotten employed by a Japanese company and currently lives in Japan. Therefore, we could offer her to visit Kagawa for the weekend.

Now Let’s Enjoy Kagawa!!

The first time Miso-soup/

After meeting up in person finally!!!! We went to have lunch. We picked a place where an old traditional warehouse was renovated into a modern-traditional style cafe. The name is Ta-Kura(Ta 蔵). This place is famous for lunch hamburger steaks. Their lunch menu is the style you pick the main meal and a bowl of rice and a bowl of miso soup are served together. If you add 300 yen, your choice of drink and dessert of the day will be served.

Ly has been in Japan for a month and she hasn’t had a chance to try much Japanese food, yet. So, she picked KARA-A-GE (唐揚げ: deep-fried lightly seasoned chicken).

Today’s Main Events!

During our virtual Internship, we did a virtual tour of Kagawa. The 2 places I showed were “Konpira-san” and “Marugame-Jo“, a shrine and a castle. So, this time, we took her there. (Click here for the article about our virtual tour back in 2020)

The famous stone steps start here!

The famous shrine “kompira-guh(金刀比羅宮)”, known as “Konpira-san(こんぴらさん)”, is famous for the number of stone steps to get to the main building. 785 steps to the main building and 1,368 steps to the further shrine. This time we climbed 785 steps. Ly asked us to take her photo before she gets tired from climbing. This spot is right before the stone steps start.

The OMIKUJI (fortune-telling) I picked /

Ly experienced the manners of how to pray at shrines and paper printed fortune-telling called “OMIKUJI”. Ly has very good Japanese both speaking and reading. So, I explained to her how to read “OMIKUJI”. It is considered a message from the god in the shrine. She got a message “keep your head low but keep your hard work. The hard work will turn things better.” The photo is the one I picked.

There is the oldest still-functioning KABUKI theater in this area, called “KANAMARUZA (金丸座)”. We dropped by there and happened to be tour was about to start. We were lucky that we got a very enthusiastic and knowledge-full guide.

Marugame Castle is one of 12 castles that remain in its original buildings in Japan. But this castle has more value to it. Marugame Castle is in the Marugame city of Kagawa where I was born and raised. The castle is the model of the logo mark of KoLe SHIKOKU Japan.

Dining at the night cafe to see what we do / 弊社の仕事を知れる夜カフェで食事

Left: me, Middle: CEO Teruo Manri, Right: Ly /

KoLe SHIKOKU Japan is a service Pon&Con Kikaku, Inc. provides. Pon&Con Kikaku, Inc. has an Architect & Building Division (A&B div). This is the cafe our A&B div worked on and I designed the interior. Also, I’ve known the owner of the cafe since I was 17. He was a kitchen staff of the restaurant I worked for the first time in my career.

A wonderful meal allowed us to chat about many things. The most reglet I had during our virtual internship was not being able to create the chance for interns to chat about things outside of work, enough. I believe small chats which nothing to do with work is important. It makes the team stronger. Just having a conversation during a 2 hours dinner allowed me to learn about her more than the time we spent on our internship.

I was hoping that I could introduce the owner of the cafe to Ly. But the day before this day, another shop of his was broadcasted on local TV and the shop was busy that he had to be there. Maybe next time! I’ll tell you why in the next part.

The Tour for Ly to be able to say “I’m back” next time / 次回 「ただいま!」

I had a background theme for the tour this time. Now Ly lives in Japan away from her family. During the internship, Ly told me that her dream is to live in Japan to study or work. Once I heard about her dream, I decided that once she arrived in Japan, I will be her family in Japan. The place she can come back to relax for no reason asked and have no judgment. Luckily, she lives in a place 3~4 hours bus ride away from us. I wanted her to feel Kagawa her 2nd parents’ home. To do that, I picked places that we can visit and see the same faces every time she comes back and if she wants to. The people who will welcome her every time with arms open. Day 2 was the day to connect her with the people who I trust to do that.

MUST HAVE LOCAL SOUL FOOD/

There are many places famous for UDONs (the thick white wheat noodles) in Japan. One of them is here in Kagawa. The UDON noodles made in a certain locally traditional way are called SANUKI-UDON. SANUKI is an old name for Kagawa.

The breakfast for the 2nd day was SANUKI-UDON! We took her to an UDON shop where we go regularly. “Sanuki Udon HISAEDA”. I don’t need to mention the taste of the UDON they serve. If we were not satisfied with the taste, we wouldn’t go there regularly. Other than the taste, HISAEDA has 2 unique characters. One of them is its atmosphere. All staff who works there are energetic and cheerful like sunlight. The center of the sunlight is the owner, Mr. Hisaeda. The other uniqueness is the place has many experiences of hiring foreigners. Some of them have learned how to make SANUKI-UDON and brought the skill and knowledge back to their countries.

On the first day, Ly learned the different kinds of SANUKI-UDON and how to order. Ly ordered her UDON by herself. Because her language level is high that many people have not realized that she is a foreigner until I introduced her to them! Well done, Ly!

Before we go, I asked Mr.Hisaeda to take a photo with her. I am sure that he will welcome her when she comes here, again.

Sightseeing is sightseeing /

Although I had an underwater intention of connecting Ly with my trusting local people, sightseeing is sightseeing. After warming our bodies up with heart-filled hot UDON, we visited THE MUST VISIT tourists’ spot “RITSURIN GARDEN”, the largest Japanese garden among the cultural property gardens which are designated as a national special place of scenic beauty.

This is a must to do. Experiencing Ceremony style Japanese Tea with the garden view which the generations of the feudal lords have seen a couple of centuries ago.

Ly seems to be loved by nature and a few miracles happened during our trip. On the first day at KONPIRASAN, there are 2 horses that are believed as gods’ rides. One of them was out of horse house and galloping. I’ve visited there countless times but I have never seen it. And this day…when we are having tea…

There was a great cormorant resting on a rock of the view we had… The lady who brought our tea told us that she has been working there for a long time but she has never seen a bird come there.

This garden has a lot of carp. Among many of them, there are only a few white gold color ones. They say that it is hard to find one and if you see it, it brings you good luck. During our visit, we spotted 3 different white gold ones!

This garden has been here since the late 16th century. People have been taking care of this garden till today. Not just taking care of plants but also repairing structures from time to time is important.

The bridge Ly is on in the photo has a personal sentimental value to our CEO Manri. He is a former 3rd generation traditional carpenter (currently, he works as an architect). Within the long history of this garden, Manri’s grandfather has done the repairing.

Being taught by the certified artisan! /

Our internship was about marketing. Our interns created Instagram posts to promote the services of KoLe SHIKOKU Japan. Tourism and Products. To do so, they learned what kind of products we have and who create them. Takashi Morimoto the certified local traditional crafts artisan was the one corporated during the internship and the main artisan who produces the products we have. We visited his workshop and Ly tried to assemble a “build your own photo frame kit”.

This time, Ly was asked if she could help Mr.Morimoto for one thing. Ly was asked to check if the assemble manual that Mr. & Mrs. Morimoto created works. Mr.Morimoto told and consulted Mrs.Morimoto about the parts Ly was not clear about. Ly also has suggested a few expressions to make the manual easier to understand for the people who have never done this craft.

Ly has made 2 craftsmen surprised! Mr.Morimoto is a joinery craftsman and a KUDE crafts artisan, and our CEO Manri is a traditional carpenter. They both work with wood, some tools are common, and they both share some knowledge. As soon as they saw how Ly uses a hammer, instantly they were surprised. Because not so many people can use the hammer correctly in the sense of craftsmen. They were again both surprised when they heard it was her first time.

Ly asked for an autograph from Mr.Morimoto on the completed product. And we talked for a while. Mr.&Mrs. Morimoto were surprised by Ly’s language level and impressed by her new dream and future plan. I am sure they will welcome, Ly, when she comes back here again.

Through and make a wish! /

The last stop was the top of Mt.Yashima. There are people who I wanted to introduce Ly to at a souvenir shop. “Senyotei”. It was Sunday afternoon and a shop was busy as well as we had a bus to catch. But I am sure we will have more time to get to know each other next time and they will welcome Ly next time she visits.

When you visit the top of YASHIMA, I would like you to try “KAWARA-NAGE(瓦投げ)”. Get a set of disks called “KAWARA” and through them away from an observation platform with your wish. Ly threw them well the way I would never demonstrate better, so check the video.

I hope she enjoyed it / 楽しんでくれたかな?

It was the first encounter with Kagawa for her that I probably put a little too many things in 2days 1night. The next time, which I am hoping will happen, we will have a less packed schedule with Ly’s choice of activity. I just hope that she enjoyed this visit enough to consider Kagawa as 2nd home.

The strength of having a Local Culture & Language attendant /

KoLe SHIKOKU Japan provides a “Local Culture & Language Attendant” service when you visit Kagawa. The person who will attend you will most likely be me. There are 2 best benefits of hiring me as your attendant.
KoLe SHIKOKU Japan

One is the language. There are many dialects spoken in Japan and even native Japanese speakers from outside of the area cannot understand them fully or at all. Ly has really good Japanese but even at her level, it is a real challenge to understand dialects. Roughly understanding is better than nothing but sometimes the juiciest parts are spoken in the dialects. Also, for people who have been in the area and spoken the dialect in their entire life, sometimes we use dialect without not knowing the words are dialect. But I was born and raised here in Kagawa, Shikoku. I won’t miss the juiciest parts to inform you.

The other is activities not in the guidebooks. Since our area has been picked and introduced by Lonely Planet and Times, more places have been introduced in English. But unfortunately not everything. If you give me the theme of your trip, I can look for the activities and places you might like in the local eyes, languages, and network. Also, we work closely with the artists and artisans to promote and export their items to you. With the network, your personal visits to them, like Ly did this time, become possible. That is not in any guidebook.
