GESHI(夏至) is the 10th of “the 24 seasons (二十四節気 /NIJUSHI-SEKKI/)”. In the 24 seasons, one season is about 15 days. GESHI starts on the day of the summer solstice, the day we have the longest hours of daytime.
Traditionally it is the time of the year for farmers to plant rice.
This rice planting is called “田植え /TA-U-E/”.
田植え (/TA-U-E/) season acturally starts from 2 seasons back in the 24 seasons.
SHOUMAN(小満) is in late May, to preparing for 田植え(/TA-U-E/).
BOUSHU(芒種) is in early June, to seeding rice on seedling beds.
Then GESHI. It is to transplant the young rice plants from the seedling beds to the large rice fields.
During GESHI, we have the day called “半夏生 /HAN-GE-SHOU/. It is about the middle of GESHI season. 半夏生(/HAN-GE-SHOU/) is Japanese original day (ZASSETSU). It is the targeting day for farmers to finish 田植え(/TA-U-E/).
Today, some places have slightly different schedules. However, in Kagawa (where we are), most places do it around this season.
If you would like to see 田植え(/TA-U-E/) in Kagawa, Japan. BOSHU(芒種: early June) till early GESHI(夏至:end of June till early July) is the season. It is calming scenery to just look at people do 田植え(/TA-U-E/).
Weather-wise, it is the rainy season called “TSU-YU(梅雨)” in Japan. Although Kagawa gets way less rainy days compared to other prefectures, you better be prepared for a few days that will be strongly rained during your visit.
